Kill Bill is the perfect date night movie and this is what Cosmo missed

When it comes to date night movies, most people think of romantic comedies or tear-jerking dramas, but why settle for clichés when you can have swords, vengeance, and a whole lot of style? Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2 might not seem like the obvious choice for a cozy night in, but that’s precisely why it’s perfect. Equal parts adrenaline-pumping action and epic love story, this martial arts masterpiece offers something for everyone—whether you’re rooting for The Bride’s revenge or marveling at the breathtaking cinematography. So, grab some popcorn (maybe skip the sushi), settle in, and let’s explore why these bloody, beautiful films are the ultimate date night thrill ride.

Let’s set the scene: You been texting your crush all day hyping yourselves up for the nights festivities. You’ve got caviar and candles, filet mignon dinner served in wine sauce, and you’ve plugged in your most romantic vanilla hearth glade plug. The only thing left is to pick the movie, a dilemma more complicated than any trolley problem.

We’ve all been there

Kill Bill, directed by Quentin Tarantino, began as a passion project deeply inspired by martial arts films, spaghetti westerns, and samurai cinema. The film, originally intended to be a single release, was split into two volumes due to its extensive runtime. Tarantino collaborated closely with Uma Thurman, who co-created the concept of The Bride during the making of Pulp Fiction. Production spanned across continents, with scenes filmed in Japan, China, Mexico, and the United States. The film’s breathtaking action choreography was handled by Yuen Woo-Ping, a legendary fight coordinator known for his work on The Matrix. Released in 2003 and 2004, Kill Bill is renowned for its genre-blending style, homage to cult cinema, and striking visual flair, becoming a landmark in Tarantino’s filmography and pop culture history.

The movie opens on a tacky yellow pickup pulling up in front of a suburban home in the middle of a cozy neighborhood. We meet the protagonist, a mysterious and worn looking woman. She walks to the house and knocks. A woman answers but quickly shuts her door the second she recognizes her mysterious visitor. A fight immediately ensues as the mysterious woman breaks the door in and the two woman squabble in the living room! The stranger is smashed into the glass coffee table smashing it and sending pieces everywhere! Knives are drawn and just as quick as the fight ensued, a moment of peace interrupts them as a school bus can be seen pulling up outside the egress window.

A child walks into the house and immediately this ferocious female fighter switches roles and tells her daughter that her dogs had been roughing around a little too hard in the living room. The girl is ushered to her room by her mother and rejoins the unnamed woman in the kitchen where she dresses her wounds.

We get our first taste of backstory and learn a little more about the history of these two woman and finally get some names. The mother reveals her disapproval of code names. Why did she get “Viper” while her visitor was named “Black Mamba”?! They agree to finish this fight away from the child, and as a polite host does, Viper offers a cup of coffee and Black Mamba accepts her offering of peace. Viper reaches into the cupboard and pulls out a cereal box but not just any cereal box, a cereal box containing a gun. Viper fires the gun through the bottom of the box and Black Mamba dodges the bullet like Neo from the Matrix! Black Mamba returns volley and lunges a knife at the Viper! A fatal hit. As some as the Black Mamba pulls her knife from the fresh cadaver, she steps aside to reveal the child from earlier.

Enter: Kill Bill

Let’s break this movie down a bit and really hone on why this movie is always the right pick as we point out a few rules to the perfect movie:

  • Date night movies require some kind of romantic storyline

While yes, this is a moderately gory samurai western, it’s also a story of love and a poetic journey through loss. It follows two lovers who’ve separated and must come to terms with having to say goodbye but not without rekindling their love one last night.

  • It’s got to have a precise amount of humor and lightheartedness

Movies can range on a scale of how serious vs how goofy they are. Kill Bill hits it dead center by telling one of the most compelling stories of the 00’s while tying everything together with some of the cheesiest moments in cinematic history. The blood is so obviously fake and the wires aren’t too hard to spot. The dialogue is dramatic but every joke and bit is sly and absurd that it keeps you on your toes the whole way through.

  • It has to be memorable

And wow does it hit the mark! Between the dramatic scenes of seat edging tension to the humorous scenes and effects, every piece of this two part saga pull you in and captivates you the whole way through!

I would honestly recommend Kill Bill to anyone looking to score some serious points on the first date.

10/10 absolute banger!
